Biometric vs Smart Card Access Control: How to Choose
The biometric vs card access control question comes up in almost every enterprise project we scope in India, usually somewhere between the floor plan review and the budget sign-off. Both technologies work. The right answer depends on your door count, your throughput at peak, and how much you are willing to spend on credential administration over the next five years.
Where smart cards still win
Smart cards — DESFire EV3 or Seos, not the legacy 125 kHz proximity cards still sold cheaply in the market — remain the workhorse for most corporate campuses. A reader costs a fraction of a biometric unit, throughput at a turnstile is roughly one second per person, and issuing a replacement takes a minute at the front desk.
The weakness is transferability. A card does not know who is holding it. Tailgating and buddy-punching are card problems, not reader problems. If you are still running unencrypted proximity cards, treat that as the urgent fix — those are cloned with equipment costing under ₹5,000.
Where biometrics earn their cost
Biometric readers bind access to the person. That matters at server rooms, cash-handling areas, R&D labs, and any door where an auditor will ask who actually entered. Modern face-recognition readers now clear a person in under a second, which has largely resolved the throughput objection that made fingerprint readers unpopular at main lobbies.
The considerations are cost — typically three to six times a card reader per door — and data governance. Biometric templates are sensitive personal data under India's DPDP framework. Store templates on the reader or on the card itself rather than in a central database, document your retention period, and obtain consent. We build this into the design phase rather than retrofitting it after an audit finding.
What most enterprises actually deploy
In practice, the sensible design is tiered. Cards or mobile credentials at perimeter and floor doors, biometrics or biometric-plus-card at the twenty or thirty doors that genuinely warrant it. On a 200-door campus, that usually means fewer than 15 percent of doors carry a biometric reader, which keeps the capital cost manageable while closing the audit gap where it counts.
Mobile credentials deserve a mention here too. Phone-based access sits between the two on cost and is harder to hand over casually than a plastic card. Several of our multi-site clients now run mobile as the default and reserve physical cards for visitors and contractors.
Making the decision
Walk your floor plan and classify every door into three tiers: convenience, controlled, and critical. Price a card reader for tier one, a card or mobile reader with audit logging for tier two, and a biometric or dual-factor reader for tier three. That exercise usually takes an afternoon and settles the argument faster than any vendor comparison chart.
