Foxnet Deploys Cloud-First Security Infrastructure for Abacus Technology's New Chennai Office

CHENNAI — Foxnet Securitas has completed the security and IT infrastructure build for Abacus Technology's new Chennai office, delivering the passive network, cloud access control, cloud video surveillance, visitor management and meeting-room AV as a single coordinated fit-out. The project was designed cloud-native from the first drawing: no on-premise recorder, no local access control server, no head-end room of appliances waiting to be replaced in five years. On a greenfield office that choice is available in a way it rarely is on an occupied site.

Why a greenfield fit-out is the right moment to go cloud

Most Indian enterprises meet cloud security systems halfway through a building's life. There is already an NVR in a cupboard, an access control server under someone's desk, a topology inherited from a previous integrator and a licence renewal nobody wants to write off. Migration becomes a negotiation about sunk cost rather than a decision about architecture.

A new office removes that argument. Nothing has been bought, so nothing is stranded. The cabling contractor, the access control designer and the AV designer work on the same drawings at the same time, so door positions, reader back-boxes, camera locations and cable routes are reconciled on paper instead of on site. And with no live system running there is no cutover — no weekend of manned doors while a database migrates, no parallel running where two platforms each hold half the truth about who has access to what.

Cloud also shifts the ongoing burden from maintaining hardware to an operating expense line: platform updates arrive centrally, administration happens in a browser, and adding a second office later is an account-level exercise rather than a fresh server build. For a company whose IT team is small relative to its footprint, that is the difference between security infrastructure it can run and infrastructure it will quietly stop patching.

Cloud is not automatically right everywhere. Data residency remains a legitimate objection in Indian procurement, particularly in BFSI, and any cloud video or visitor management deployment must be assessed against the DPDP Act 2023 on consent, purpose limitation and retention, and CERT-In's 2022 directions on log retention and incident reporting. Those questions belong in the design phase — and where they can be answered, as they could here, a greenfield site is the cheapest moment to commit.

What Foxnet delivered

The scope was structured as one layer supporting another, not as parallel packages procured separately.

  • Structured cabling and network — horizontal copper to every camera, reader, access point and desk position, plus containment, patch panels, racks and switching, delivered under Foxnet's IT infrastructure practice.
  • Cloud access control — door controllers reporting to a cloud-managed platform, with credential administration, audit trail and multi-site readiness in a browser. See access control.
  • Cloud video surveillance — IP cameras retained on a cloud platform rather than a site NVR, with remote review and no recorder to fail unnoticed. See surveillance and monitoring.
  • Visitor management — a front-of-house workflow holding visitor data under a defined retention policy rather than in a paper register. See visitor management.
  • Meeting-room AV — displays, conferencing audio and video and room control in the collaboration spaces, cabled and commissioned alongside the rest of the fit-out.

Any description of scale here is indicative only: a commercial office fit-out of the size typical for a growing technology firm's regional site, with cameras and doors in the tens rather than the hundreds. Foxnet is not publishing device counts, contract value or programme duration. What transfers to other sites is the sequence and the architecture, not the bill of quantities.

Chennai and Tamil Nadu: the two constraints that shape the programme

Two local realities shaped this fit-out, and both matter before signing a Chennai lease. The first is fire compliance. India's National Building Code 2016 Part 4 and IS 2189 set the technical baseline, but the fire NOC is administered by the state — here the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services — and the documentation, inspection sequence and practical turnaround differ from what a tenant may have met in Maharashtra or Karnataka. A tenant fit-out also sits underneath the building's own approvals, so the real question is how the tenant's works interact with the base building's detection, suppression and evacuation provisions, and who signs off that interface — clarified early, it avoids reopening finished ceilings.

The second is base-build handover timing, the recurring practical problem in Indian commercial towers. Security and low-voltage works are among the last trades in but among the first to need the shell: containment routes, riser space, earthing and clean power all depend on the developer. When handover slips — and it frequently does — the security contractor absorbs the compression, because the move-in date rarely moves with it. The mitigation is to front-load everything off critical path: agree routes and riser allocations in writing, pre-stage and test racks, pre-configure the cloud platforms and user directories before a device is on site, and certify passive infrastructure as it goes in. Cloud helps in an overlooked way here — platform configuration is not gated by physical access to a server room.

The passive layer decides whether the active layer works

The most common failure mode in a cloud-first deployment is not the cloud. It is the cabling and switching underneath it: if the passive layer is wrong, the platform inherits every fault and the symptoms present as software problems. Four disciplines matter more than any product choice.

  • PoE budgeting done as a calculation, not an assumption. A switch's total power budget is a separate number from its per-port capability under IEEE 802.3af/at/bt. Cameras with heaters, IR illuminators or PTZ mechanics draw far more than their idle figure, so the budget must be sized for simultaneous worst case with headroom, not for datasheet typicals.
  • Cable runs measured against the 90 m permanent link. TIA-568 and ISO/IEC 11801 define a 100 m channel: a 90 m permanent link plus patch cords. That is route length through containment, not a straight line on a drawing, and cameras in stair cores, terraces and far corners are where it gets breached. The fix — an intermediate node, a fibre leg, or a relocated IDF — is far cheaper at design stage than at commissioning.
  • Access controllers on UPS-backed ports. Doors must behave predictably through a power event. Controllers and the switches feeding them belong on UPS-protected circuits and PoE ports, with fail-safe versus fail-secure chosen per door against the egress and life-safety strategy, not applied uniformly.
  • A separate VLAN for cameras. Video traffic is high-volume and, on many devices, indifferent to good security hygiene. Segmenting cameras onto their own VLAN with controlled routing to the cloud limits congestion on the corporate network and the blast radius if a device is compromised.
A new office is the one moment when you can design the network and the security systems together instead of bolting one onto the other. At Abacus Technology's Chennai site we spent as much time on PoE budgets, cable routes and VLAN design as on the platforms themselves — if the passive layer is right, cloud access control and cloud video are genuinely low-maintenance; if it is wrong, no platform will save you.
